A Self Proclaimed Gaming Aficionado

Hm. Before I started diving headfirst into this gameblogging scene, I wanted to give some background information about myself. I also think this is a good opportunity to explain the sorts of contributions I plan on making to Gamer Think.

A video game player, lover, and collector, I started gaming at the age of 8 with an Atari 2600 and Space Invaders. Since that moment, video games and the gaming industry have been an unshakable presence in my day to day life. JRPGs, WRPGs, FPSs, RTSs, and any other obscure acronym you can think of, I play them all and I love them all.

Despite my collection of 300+ games, I'm still a discriminating gamer. I recognize what makes a game click and what makes it fail. I recognize that all the bells and whistles of a game don't amount to anything more than a tech demo unless it has soul. I pride myself on being able to objectively look at a game and tell you "play or nay," so I'm going to do my share of reviewing games and give my insights on where game developers should be headed.

I also frequently observe the gaming community, lurking on forums and reading various blogs/articles. They offer interesting insights into the industry as a whole- development processes, business models, creative priorities, and the remarkable level of politics involved in a game's production. It's really quite fascinating the amount of red tape and scrutiny that games have accumulated over the years, likely attributable to its growing social presence. This blog will afford me the opportunity to share my opinions on these daily happenings with you... and let me soapbox maybe a teensy weensy bit.

A quick caveat. My friends sometimes refer to me as a sort of gaming masochist. I crave extremely difficult games with rewarding play- Maximo, Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden: Black, Ninja Gaiden 2, Shinobi, Nightshade. And if I really enjoy a game, I'll beat all the difficulty modes (except for easy, of course) just to fuel my deep seated and admittedly pathetic gamer pride. Occasionally, I'm sure you'll hear me rave about a particular game and the intricacies that make it such a spectacularly difficult game. I may or may not supplement these with gameplay videos of my own.

As for my non-gaming lifestyle, I graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2007 as a psychology and political science double major. I work a 9-5 and will continue to do so for a few years. Eventually, I may go back to school, but nothing is set in stone.

Okay then. Until the next post!
